The magnesite mine was opened at Oberdorf to exploit the so-called "Wieser" deposit in 1906. Five years later, the first shaft kiln was built at Oberdorf. The mine was modernised in 1960 and a new fluidised bed kiln installed in 1985. STYROMAG was founded in 1996 and with the acquisition of COMAG in Turkey in 2000, a company now run under the designation of CALMAG, has considerably broadened its range of products.
